The Gallery U- The Mask of the Moon is the Shadow of the Earth- Oct 22, 2015
“The Mask of the Moon is the Shadow of the Earth”
(Chinese paint and pigment on rice paper)
This piece from the Spring of 2015 represents the culmination of my Chinese Circle series. The idea is based off of the Japanese practice of enso which is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. I have never liked doing things quickly and uninhibited; I like calculated decisions that are open to change based on circumstance but that are defined and practiced with purpose. For The Mask of the Moon is the Shadow of the Earth, I made the circle with at least a dozen strokes but allowed the silhouette to bleed into the center to allow for foliage. This relationship I liked to the moon and the Earth and the literal mask of darkness on the moon is caused by the Earth. The one vison that we see is a combination of so many different factors that are both intentional and unintentional but blend into a seamless vison.
