“The Dance of Aurora”

(Acrylic paint on canvas)

This week’s post is going back in time to my first large scale commission that I painted in my parents garage back after my first year of college. This was one of those pieces that came together with a deadline fast approaching and several bad paintings underneath. As I was beyond slowly losing my patience with this thing, both the actual painting and increasing concerns that I “was covering everything in sight with paint” (sorry dad), I had a single night where I painted the majority of the image. The breakthrough was letting go of my original plan and the careful order that I had constructed and letting the paint and the colors do as they will with me as the sky painter. The next few days were just touch ups and finalizing the image of the Roman goddess of the Dawn bringing a close to the colorful night to make way for a new day. This painting really has stayed with me not just because of how it looks, but because of the trial and error and finally relative success with the process and with my own artistic ability and confidence.
