“Broken Night (WIP)”
(Oil paint on canvas)
I believe in creating a mythology around my work and especially in the creation of my work. Each painting has its own laws that are crafted and the more developed the painting, the more rigid the laws. This is a work in progress painting that has been under construction for over two years now. It is not finished, but at the same time it isn’t unfinished. The surface is covered and ideas are imprinted, but the laws are still in flux. The theatricality of this piece makes it cohesive with my body of work as well as the inverted color spaces, different areas of truth and illusion, and even the depiction of muted flesh tones; yet I don’t think it has evolved enough to fully belong. The original idea was to depict a shattering of the illusion of night and a revealing of a clear and true blue sky in mid-day with the moon being the curator of both. This leaves us as this strange constant caught in their flux, subject to their whims and desires. Similar to a leaf caught in the wind. As time has passed I think it says something more along the lines of we are the curators of our nights and our days and the moon is the constant that keeps us grounded amidst the turmoil that we usher in. But as I said, the ideas and laws are in flux and I’m not sure when they will settle.
